The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced it has received 10 additional applications from groups seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of pending requests to 144 ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This was revealed in a statement released on Thursday by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee.
“The Commission has received 10 more letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the number so far to 144,” Olumekun stated.
According to the Commission, details of the new applicants—including proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership structures—have been published on the INEC website and official platforms for transparency and public awareness.
This update follows an earlier disclosure by INEC on June 25, when it announced 110 pending applications. Since then, an additional 34 have been submitted for consideration.
INEC noted that a comprehensive review process is ongoing to verify which of the applicants meet the statutory requirements for registration under Nigeria’s electoral law.
In a major development, Olumekun also announced the completion of a party registration portal, developed internally by INEC’s ICT department to streamline the application and verification process.
“As is the case with all our IT innovations, the new portal has been demonstrated before the Commission and approved for deployment,” he said.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to keeping the public updated and ensuring transparency in the ongoing registration process as preparations for the 2027 elections gain momentum.
