Lagos has earned a prestigious spot among the world’s top 20 nightlife destinations, ranking 14th globally and 2nd in Africa, according to a newly released report by global lifestyle authority Time Out Magazine.
The ranking, based on thousands of surveys from locals and insights from nightlife experts, highlights Lagos as one of the world’s most vibrant and evolving cities for after-dark entertainment. The city scored high marks from residents, with 79% rating its nightlife positively.
In Africa, Lagos came in just behind Cape Town, South Africa, which secured the 11th position globally. Other African cities on the list include Cairo (15th) and Marrakech (19th), placing Lagos well ahead of many continental peers.
Time Out praised the city’s transition from traditional high-end lounges to a more eclectic and inclusive underground rave culture. Notable hotspots such as SweatItOutLagos and Our Group Therapy were credited for shaping the city’s dynamic after-hours scene.
Reacting to the global recognition, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, described the ranking as a clear endorsement of the state’s growing reputation as a safe and vibrant cultural hub.
“This ranking is a testament to the effectiveness of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s security architecture and tourism strategy. It also reflects the rising number of visitors we’ve seen, especially during high-impact events like Detty December,” he said.
Omotoso revealed that the state government is now working to structure its end-of-year festivities into a formal tourism calendar, with major events planned to drive local economic growth and international attention.
He also confirmed Lagos will make history in 2025 as the first African city to host the EI Water Race Championship, a major international sporting event.
“This shows that nightlife is more than just parties — it’s an engine for tourism, investment, and culture,” Omotoso added, quoting the Time Out report which said, “Nightlife takes on lots of different forms, and cities all over the world have adapted to our changing habits when it comes to going out.”
This recognition comes just months after Lagos also featured in Time Out’s 2024 list of top nightlife cities, where it ranked 6th globally, ahead of major cities like Rotterdam and Manchester.
Time Out Magazine, established in 1968, operates in 333 cities across 59 countries and is globally regarded as an authority in travel, culture, and urban lifestyle recommendations.
