The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared support for Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, over his recent call for adherence to security protocols for all high-profile visitors to the state, including former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi.
Speaking on Tuesday during the commissioning of the refurbished New Edo Line Transport Company in Benin City, Governor Okpebholo clarified that his remarks about Obi’s visit were not politically motivated but rooted in the need to maintain public safety.
“As the Chief Security Officer of the state, it’s only appropriate that I’m informed when high-profile individuals visit. It’s not about politics—this is about safety,” the governor said.
He recounted a tragic incident in which a police escort died during an improperly coordinated movement, stressing the importance of communication and adherence to standard security procedures to avoid future occurrences.
Wike: “Protocols Are for Protection, Not Politics”
In a show of solidarity, Minister Wike stated that informing state authorities ahead of such visits is a standard practice globally and should not be misunderstood as political maneuvering.
“When Mr. Obi visited me as Governor of Rivers State, he followed due process and obtained the necessary clearances,” Wike noted. “These protocols are not political—they are simply for the visitor’s own security.”
Wike also praised Governor Okpebholo’s performance in office, describing him as a leader focused on delivery and results, not distractions.
“Even if the Supreme Court had ruled otherwise, your performance would still stand out. You’ve chosen impact over noise, and that’s commendable,” Wike said, subtly referencing the recent legal battles over the governorship seat.
A Boost for Public Transport and Security
The revamped New Edo Line, which Governor Okpebholo said is part of efforts to revitalize Edo’s public transport system, is expected to enhance mobility for residents, especially students and civil servants.
The event was attended by notable dignitaries, including former Governor and current Senator representing Edo North, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and other stakeholders from across the state.
“We Won’t Be Distracted” — Okpebholo
In his closing remarks, Governor Okpebholo thanked the people of Edo for their continued support, promising to remain focused on projects that will directly benefit citizens.
“My focus is on projects that will touch the lives of our people. We will not be distracted by noise on social media or political side talks,” he said.
The message from the event was clear: security and development must remain above politics, and Edo State’s leadership intends to prioritize both.
