FG Makes One-Year Engineering Training Mandatory Before NYSC

The Federal Government has introduced a compulsory one-year training programme for all engineering graduates from Nigerian universities and polytechnics, to be completed before they proceed for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The new policy was announced in advance of the 33rd Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) Assembly, scheduled to hold on July 14, 2025, in Abuja.

According to Hobnob News, President of COREN, Professor Sadiq Abubakar, disclosed that the initiative is designed as a residency programme where fresh engineering graduates will acquire hands-on experience in their respective areas of specialisation. He emphasized that without completing this training, graduates would not be recognized as engineers in Nigeria.

“The one-year residency will be carried out in collaboration with engineering firms and institutions. Upon completion, participants will then qualify to proceed for NYSC,” Abubakar stated.

He added that the training period will count toward the registration process with COREN as engineers or technologists. While noting that the concept is not entirely new, he said it is now being revived and made mandatory to address the quality and competence of engineering professionals in the country.

“This development will significantly boost the skill set of our engineering graduates and ensure they are not only prepared to meet local demands but are also equipped to compete globally,” Abubakar said.

In a significant boost for international mobility, the COREN President also announced that Nigeria has signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement with professional engineering bodies in Europe, Asia, and the Americas through the International Engineering Alliance. This move grants Nigerian engineers broader global recognition and opportunities.

The new policy is expected to take effect immediately, with details to be formally outlined at the upcoming COREN Assembly.
