Madonna University Alumni Urge Students to Focus on Skills for Career Success

The President of Madonna University Alumni Association, Chuka Nwachukwu, has called on students to shift their focus from academic certificates to skills acquisition, stressing that the modern job market prioritizes relevance, adaptability, and value creation over paper qualifications.

Delivering the keynote address at the 2025 Madonna University Career Day, held at the university’s main campus in Elele, Nwachukwu urged undergraduates to embrace both technical and soft skills as essential tools for career success in an increasingly dynamic global economy.

“Today’s world demands more than paper qualifications; it demands a positive mindset, digital fluency, and a strong sense of self-leadership,” he stated. “Your certificate might get you into the room, but your skills will keep you there.”

Attitude, Not Aptitude, Defines Opportunity

Speaking on the theme “Navigating the Future: Preparing for Careers in a Dynamic Global Economy,” Nwachukwu reflected on his post-graduation journey, highlighting the importance of platforms like LinkedIn, digital certifications, internships, and lifelong learning.

He emphasized that many job seekers in Nigeria are held back not by a lack of talent, but by poor mindset and professional attitude.

“Think of yourself as a brand. What do you represent? What value do you offer?” he asked the students, encouraging them to take ownership of their personal and professional development.

Alumni Projects to Drive Innovation on Campus

In a show of commitment, Nwachukwu announced the Alumni Association’s plan to construct an ultra-modern ICT Centre on campus, as well as the launch of an Alumni Endowment Fund to mobilise long-term investments in transformative university projects.

“We are building a vibrant alumni network—active, empowered, and impactful—that supports not just the university but also uplifts fellow alumni and creates career opportunities for current students,” he affirmed.

Support from Alumni and University Leadership

Also speaking at the event, former National President of the Alumni Association, Chima Achu, encouraged students to uphold personal integrity, maintain a passion for excellence, and embrace lifelong learning as a core personal value.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Casmir Anyanwu commended the alumni for their enduring support and reaffirmed Madonna University’s commitment to producing graduates equipped with the skills, values, and resilience required to thrive in the 21st century.

The Career Day concluded with vibrant networking sessions, mentorship engagements, and a renewed partnership between the student body and a steadily growing alumni network determined to give back.
