MTN Boosts Borno’s Digital Future with 750 Tablets to Schools

In a strategic move to support digital literacy and educational advancement, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has donated 750 computer tablets to 15 secondary schools across Borno State — an initiative hailed as a major leap toward bridging the digital divide in Northeast Nigeria.

The symbolic handover ceremony took place in Maiduguri, the state capital, on Wednesday. Each of the 15 selected schools received 50 tablets, which are expected to enhance e-learning and digital literacy among students.

Speaking at the event, Tijanni Salihu, MTN’s Acting Managing Director for Borno, Yobe, and Gombe States, described the donation as more than just a gift of devices — but a “catalyst for innovation and learning.”

“This ceremony represents more than the distribution of digital devices. It reflects our shared commitment to education, innovation, and opportunity for every child, no matter where they live. MTN believes everyone deserves a modern connected life,” he stated.

Vice President-Inspired Initiative

Salihu revealed that the initiative was inspired by a special request from Vice President Kashim Shettima, acting on behalf of the Federal Government, to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s digital literacy agenda.

“This initiative was conceived by His Excellency, the Vice President, to support secondary schools across the country. It aligns with the national vision for a digitally inclusive education system,” he said.

State-Guided Selection for Equitable Distribution

The MTN executive emphasized that the Borno State Government was given full responsibility to identify the 15 beneficiary schools, ensuring a fair geographical spread across all 27 local government areas.

“We wanted the process to be transparent, so we allowed the state to select the schools based on criteria that guarantee balanced distribution and impact,” he explained.

Government Reacts: A Step Forward for Borno’s 10-Year Plan

Receiving the devices, Borno State Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Lawan Wakilbe, lauded the gesture, noting that it aligns perfectly with the state’s 10-year strategic education plan.

“The governor’s roadmap includes computer literacy as a cornerstone, and this donation will significantly contribute to equipping our students with essential 21st-century skills,” Wakilbe said.

He reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring Borno youth are empowered to compete globally through tech-driven education.

Students Urged to Embrace Digital Learning

Salihu encouraged students to make the most of the opportunity, stating, “These devices are tools of transformation. Use them to chase your dreams, explore the digital world, and unlock your potential.”

As Nigeria continues to grapple with digital infrastructure gaps, initiatives like MTN’s tablet donation are playing a pivotal role in democratizing access to technology and reshaping the educational landscape — especially in underserved regions.
