A 24-year-old supermarket employee, Peter Ikyawuu, has pleaded guilty to stealing goods and cash worth N593,750 from his employer, Living Proof Supermarket, located in the Akala area of Ibadan.
Appearing before the Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court on Friday, Ikyawuu admitted to the charge of theft. The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Adebola Adeola, ordered that he be remanded in custody. The case has been adjourned until June 23 for a review of the facts and sentencing.
According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Olarotimi, the theft occurred over a six-week period, between May 2 and June 15. Olarotimi informed the court that the defendant unlawfully took goods valued at N288,750 and cash amounting to N305,000 from the supermarket.
“The total value of the items stolen by the defendant is N593,750,” said Sgt. Olarotimi, adding that the offence is in violation of Section 390(9) of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
Further proceedings are expected to determine the extent of the theft and appropriate sentencing.
