Makinde Advocates Six-Year Single Term for Political Office Holders

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called for a constitutional reform that would limit elected political office holders in Nigeria to a single term of six years. The governor made the remarks on Friday in Ibadan, during a visit to his residence by a delegation of Muslim faithful, Islamic clerics, and political stakeholders shortly after the Eid-el-Kabir prayers.

According to Hobnob News, Makinde emphasized that a single-term tenure would reduce political distractions and allow elected leaders to focus more on governance.

“That is why I feel if you remove all these distractions, a single tenure of five or six years is actually enough to focus and do the work that we are trying to do in eight years,” Makinde stated. “Well, we shouldn’t be afraid to say the fact based on data that is available to us. It has nothing to do with me. If they say I should end it, so be it.”

The visiting delegation was led by the Deputy Governor, Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal. Other notable members included the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Senator Rashidi Ladoja; former Deputy Governor and PDP Deputy National Chairman, Taofeek Arapaja; Hazeem Gbolarumi; Hamid Gbadamosi; Abass Adigun Agboworin, who represents Ibadan North-East/South-East Federal Constituency; and the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, Alhaji Dawodu Makanjuola.

Makinde’s proposal adds to the ongoing national discourse on political reforms and governance efficiency. His comments may ignite fresh debates on constitutional amendments and the structure of Nigeria’s democratic system.
