In a major political development, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring his unwavering and unapologetic support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid.
The announcement was made during a defection ceremony held on Friday at the State House in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
Speaking at the event, Governor Eno said his admiration for President Tinubu dates back to the early 2000s when he worked as a professional in Lagos while Tinubu served as governor of the state.
“As a young professional working in Lagos while he was the governor, I have always admired his style of leadership with focus and vision,” Eno stated. “I have no doubt this vigour and renewed energy is being applied to the nation today.”
He further emphasized his commitment to Tinubu’s leadership and his belief in the president’s ongoing reforms.
“I have no apology whatsoever for supporting President Tinubu for a second term in office, to complete the reforms he has started,” the governor said, reiterating his confidence in the APC-led federal government.
Governor Eno’s defection marks a significant political shift in Akwa Ibom, a state that has historically been a PDP stronghold. His move is expected to reshape the political landscape in the South-South region as the 2027 general elections approach.
The defection has already sparked varied reactions among political observers and party loyalists, with many viewing it as a boost for the APC’s influence in the region.
