A suspected employment scammer, Idris Adamu, on Monday caused a stir at the Gombe Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) when he voluntarily turned himself in, citing fear of the Commission’s growing crackdown on fraud.
The middle-aged suspect walked into the EFCC premises at exactly 1:00 p.m. on June 2, 2025, and requested an audience with the Acting Zonal Director, Deputy Commander of the EFCC (DCE) Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad.
According to EFCC sources, Adamu confessed to a string of fraudulent activities involving impersonation and obtaining money under false pretences. While speaking at the Director’s office, he admitted to defrauding multiple individuals of approximately ₦9 million by promising them non-existent employment opportunities in various Federal Government agencies.
“I came to repent of my sins and confess to the EFCC. In the past, I have obtained the aggregate sum of ₦9 million through my bank account from different individuals in the guise of offering them employment opportunities in Federal Government agencies. It was all false,” Adamu stated, adding, “I have changed, but I am afraid of the EFCC.”
In response to the confession, DCE Sa’ad thanked Adamu for his courage to come clean but emphasized that the law must take its course. He promptly directed that the suspect be handed over to the Investigation Department for a detailed probe into his alleged criminal activities.
The EFCC has not confirmed whether Adamu will be charged immediately, but officials say the case is now under active investigation.
The Commission has in recent times intensified efforts against employment-related fraud and has warned Nigerians to be wary of fake job offers, especially those requiring upfront payments.
