In response to the catastrophic floods that ravaged Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate activation of the National Emergency Response Centre to fast-track rescue and relief operations.
The President’s directive came early Saturday after receiving detailed reports on the magnitude of the disaster, which has already claimed over 150 lives and displaced more than 3,000 people. Reports indicate that at least 75 victims have been buried, while over 100 others remain missing as rescue efforts continue.
Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @officialABAT, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and reassured the affected communities of swift federal intervention.
“Upon receiving initial reports, I immediately directed the activation of the National Emergency Response Centre. I have also been briefed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the scale of the disaster and the urgent humanitarian needs,” Tinubu stated.
He confirmed that relief materials, including food supplies and temporary shelter assistance, are being urgently deployed to the affected areas.
Federal agencies including NEMA are working closely with the Niger State Government to ramp up search-and-rescue efforts and provide essential aid. The President also directed security agencies to assist in supporting emergency teams in the field.
“No Nigerian affected by this disaster will be left behind or unheard,” Tinubu assured, emphasizing the government’s resolve to restore dignity and provide hope in the wake of the disaster.
In a heartfelt message, Tinubu extended condolences to the grieving families and the entire Niger State community. “The entire nation stands in solidarity with you during this painful time. In adversity, we must unite in strength, compassion, and shared humanity,” he said.
He further urged all Nigerians to keep the victims in their prayers and to show empathy and collective action in this moment of national tragedy.
