Niger State — The devastating flood that struck communities in Mokwa Local Government Area has claimed the lives of 151 people and displaced more than 3,000 residents, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed on Saturday.
In a brief statement, NSEMA revealed that three communities were severely affected, with 503 households impacted and 265 homes completely washed away. The flooding also destroyed two bridges and two roads, complicating rescue and relief efforts.
Director General of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, detailed the grim toll: “So far, 151 corpses have been recovered, 11 people injured, and 3,018 persons displaced. The flood also damaged critical infrastructure, including two roads and two bridges within Mokwa Local Government Area.”
The tragedy began on Wednesday night following hours of heavy rainfall that caused floodwaters to surge, submerging entire neighborhoods. Earlier reports from Thursday had identified Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities as the initial hardest hit, with over 50 residential houses swept away along with their occupants.
Emergency response teams continue to work tirelessly to provide aid to survivors and restore access to affected areas. NSEMA has called for urgent support to assist displaced families and rebuild critical infrastructure.
