Tragedy in Mushin: One Killed, Three Rescued as Building Collapses in Lagos

Hobnob News — Tragedy struck in the Idi Araba area of Mushin, Lagos State, on Monday when a two-storey building under construction suddenly collapsed along Ishaga Road, directly opposite the Central Mosque.

Emergency responders confirmed that one person lost his life, while three others were rescued alive from the debris and rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Although the exact cause of the collapse remains unclear, there are growing concerns about the structural integrity of the building and possible safety violations at the site. Eyewitness accounts painted a grim picture of the incident, describing a cloud of dust, scattered debris, and residents in panic.

“I was just passing when I heard a loud crash,” said Justine Madueke, an eyewitness. “The building came down like a pack of cards. It’s a miracle more people weren’t trapped.”

Rescue efforts were led by personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other key emergency agencies.

According to Ibrahim Farinloye, the South West Coordinator of NEMA, rescue operations began immediately. He confirmed that two individuals were initially pulled out, followed by a third survivor rescued at 6:35 p.m. Unfortunately, a male victim was recovered dead at 8:00 p.m.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, disclosed that the distress call was received around 3:30 p.m., prompting a swift response from multiple agencies, including the Isolo Fire Station, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Police.

“All three survivors, adult males, sustained varying degrees of injury and were stabilized on-site before being transferred to medical facilities,” Adeseye stated. The incident is currently under investigation to determine the cause of the structural failure.

Authorities have urged construction firms and site managers across Lagos to adhere strictly to building codes and safety standards to prevent similar occurrences.
