Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Olalomi Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has been convicted and sentenced to three months in prison by Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo. The judgment was delivered on Tuesday at the Ifo Magistrate Court in Ogun State. Portable had faced a three-count charge involving assault and theft of musical instruments under charge sheet No. MIF/192C/2023.
The charges stemmed from an incident on 18 November 2022 in Okeosa, Ilogbo, where he was accused of conspiring with others to commit assault. The charge sheet stated: “That you, Badmus Habeeb Okikiola, aka Portable, and others now at large, on the 18th day of November 2022 at 11:00 hrs… did conspire among yourselves to commit felony, to wit: assault.” Another count detailed that he “did unlawfully assault one Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi (male) by beating him all over his body.” A third count accused him of stealing musical equipment including a Yamaha H55 studio monitor and AKG P420 condenser.
Portable had earlier been granted bail of N300,000 with two sureties from his family but was remanded last week after failing to appear at multiple prior court dates.
In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Ilo found Portable guilty on two of the charges. He sentenced the singer to one month’s imprisonment or a N10,000 fine for Count 1, and two months’ imprisonment or a N20,000 fine for Count 2.
The court did not convict him on the third charge of theft. The conviction marks another chapter in the singer’s controversial career, placing him behind bars or facing a financial penalty as an alternative. This outcome sends a strong signal regarding accountability, regardless of celebrity status.
