The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a mixture of thunderstorms and dust haze across various parts of the country between Sunday and Tuesday.
In its weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet forecasted moderate dust haze over northern states including Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa. Meanwhile, isolated thunderstorms are expected in parts of Adamawa and Taraba States throughout the forecast period.
For the North Central region, NiMet anticipated partly cloudy skies during the mornings, with isolated thunderstorms likely in the afternoon and evening hours across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue States.
The South is also expected to experience morning thunderstorms in areas such as Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States, with more widespread thunderstorms projected later in the day.
On Monday, the agency predicted sunny skies across much of the northern region, except for expected morning thunderstorms in Taraba and Adamawa States, extending later to Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe States.
In the North Central, morning thunderstorms are likely in Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue States, followed by afternoon and evening thunderstorms across various parts of the region. The southern states, including Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Edo, are expected to experience both morning and later thunderstorms.
By Tuesday, NiMet forecasted sunny skies with patches of clouds in the North, along with morning thunderstorms in Adamawa and Taraba States. Thunderstorms are expected to spread to Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba later in the day.
The North Central region will see partly cloudy skies in the morning and thunderstorms later in the afternoon and evening, particularly affecting the FCT, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Niger States. The southern region is set to continue experiencing thunderstorms, especially in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa in the morning and across several other states as the day progresses.
NiMet advised the public to take necessary precautions as strong winds could precede the thunderstorms. Residents in the North were also warned to be cautious of dust particles in the air.
The agency further urged airline operators to obtain up-to-date, airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning and safety.
