Former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, on Friday held a meeting with the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in Abuja, intensifying speculation about Kwankwaso’s possible return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The two political heavyweights were seen together after Jumaat prayers at a mosque in the nation’s capital, according to a report by The Nation. El-Rufai was accompanied by his eldest son, Hon. Bello El-Rufai, during the meeting.
The high-profile encounter comes amid growing rumours that Kwankwaso may have reached a deal with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which could see the former Kano State governor — along with his political base — rejoin the APC.
Political observers suggest that Kwankwaso’s potential return could significantly strengthen President Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Neither El-Rufai nor Kwankwaso has officially commented on the meeting, but sources close to both leaders hint that discussions around political realignment were a key part of their talks.
