Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the construction of a 10-megawatt Independent Power Plant at Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), to address the persistent electricity problems faced by both the university and the neighbouring Uturu community.
The Governor made this announcement during a civic reception held in his honour at Isuikwuato High School, Otankpa. The event was organised by the people of Isuikwuato Local Government Area. He noted that the power project is made possible by the recently signed Abia State Electricity Law, which grants the state the authority to execute independent electricity initiatives without requiring federal approval.
“This initiative will enhance academic productivity at ABSU and improve power supply in Uturu,” Otti said.
In addition, the Governor disclosed that strategic roads in the area, such as the Amibo–Acha and Eziama–Ndundu roads, have been listed in the state’s rehabilitation programme and would soon be addressed.
The gathering also became a political show of support, as key figures including Hon. Amobi Ogah and Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa openly backed Otti for a second term. They described him as a visionary leader who is transforming the state across all sectors.
A major political shift occurred when Hon. Lucky Johnson declared his defection to the Labour Party, announcing that all political structures in Isuikwuato had aligned with the party and the Governor’s leadership.
Other dignitaries at the event included the state’s Attorney General, Barr. Ikechukwu Uwanna; Mayor of Isuikwuato, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke; and Hon. Uche Maduako. They all commended Otti’s achievements in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and workers’ welfare, expressing full confidence in his re-election.
Prominent natives such as Dr. Onyinyechi Rufus-Obi, Mr. Ken Ahia (SAN), Dr. Chidi Mba, and Chief Chidiebere Uguru also applauded the Governor’s performance and pledged their continued support.
The event ended with a wave of defections from PDP, APGA, and AA to the Labour Party, boosting the party’s strength in Isuikwuato.
