The Kaduna State Government has rescued a 7-year-old boy, Abubakar Sani, after he suffered extreme abuse at the hands of his father, who allegedly tied the child’s legs and poured hot water on them for stealing biscuits.
The appalling incident occurred in Lere Local Government Area and left the boy with such severe injuries that both legs had to be amputated below the knee.
Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Rabi Salisu, revealed in a statement on Wednesday that the ministry was alerted about the situation nine days earlier. “By the time the report reached us, Abubakar’s legs were already decaying, with maggots emerging from the wounds. Doctors had no choice but to recommend amputation to save his life,” Salisu said.
According to Salisu, the boy was also locked in a room without adequate food for over 20 days by his father, Sani Tanimi Maishago, and stepmother. Both have since been arrested and are currently in police custody, awaiting formal charges upon the completion of investigations.
“The Kaduna State Government maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward child abuse, domestic violence, and all forms of molestation. We will ensure justice is served to set an example and deter future offenders,” the commissioner affirmed.
The Chief Medical Director of Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Abdulkadir Musa, where Abubakar is being treated, stressed the importance of equipping the boy with artificial limbs to support his future mobility and wellbeing.
Musa also urged parents to exercise restraint and empathy in disciplining children, warning that excessive punishment could result in tragic, irreversible consequences.
The Kaduna State Government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding children’s rights, with Salisu emphasizing that ensuring the social welfare and protection of every child remains a top priority.
