The Benue State Police Command has achieved a significant breakthrough in its ongoing battle against criminal activities, neutralizing 12 suspected bandits and apprehending 37 other suspects in a series of tactical operations.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Anene Sewuese Catherine, the success resulted from meticulous intelligence gathering and strategic enforcement efforts.
“On March 19, 2025, at approximately 0200hrs, a joint task force operation was conducted in Agwabi, Tombo ward, Buruku Local Government Area, following credible intelligence,” CSP Catherine stated. “The mission aimed to dismantle a notorious gang responsible for terrorizing the community.”
Upon engaging the security forces, the armed bandits launched an attack, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. “Our operatives, however, responded with superior firepower, resulting in the neutralization of 12 bandits,” she added.
During the operation, security forces recovered three AK-47 rifles, six rounds of live ammunition, camouflage uniforms, and assorted charms.
Tragically, one police officer, Inspector Terfa Anyiatse, sustained a gunshot wound and later succumbed to his injuries.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the fallen officer and honor his sacrifice,” CSP Catherine said. “The bravery and professionalism displayed by our operatives in this mission are commendable.”
In a separate operation, police operatives arrested five suspected robbers and 32 suspected cultists in Daudu and Makurdi, recovering seven locally made pistols.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Steve H. Yabanet, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents, urging the public to support law enforcement by providing credible information and reporting suspicious activities.
“The command will not tolerate any form of criminality and will deal decisively with anyone found engaging in unlawful acts,” CSP Catherine warned.
Residents of Benue State are encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies as efforts to rid the state of crime intensify.
