Ghana’s President-elect Mahama Visits Tinubu in Abuja, Strengthens Regional Cooperation

Ghana’s President-elect, John Mahama, paid a courtesy visit to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja, underscoring the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and fostering regional cooperation between the two West African nations.

The visit follows Mahama’s decisive political comeback, where he emerged victorious over the ruling party’s candidate and Ghana’s current Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 41% of the votes. Mahama’s triumph brings an end to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) eight-year rule under President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose administration faced significant economic challenges, including a debt default and an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout to stabilize Ghana’s struggling economy.

During their discussions, Mahama and Tinubu deliberated on enhancing economic ties, promoting regional stability, and addressing shared challenges, such as security concerns, trade relations, and economic development within the West African sub-region. The meeting also reflected the mutual commitment of both leaders to advance cooperation under the frameworks of ECOWAS and other regional bodies.

Mahama’s visit highlights the critical role of inter-African dialogue and partnerships in tackling economic hurdles and fostering a united approach to the region’s development priorities.
