DRC Files Criminal Complaints Against Apple Over Conflict Minerals

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has filed criminal complaints against Apple subsidiaries in France and Belgium, accusing the tech giant of using conflict minerals in its supply chain. Lawyers representing the Congolese government argue that Apple is complicit in crimes committed by armed groups controlling some of the mines in eastern DRC.

The complaints allege that Apple’s supply chain is tainted by “blood minerals,” including tin, tantalum, and tungsten extracted from conflict zones. These activities have fueled cycles of violence, funded militias and terrorist groups, and contributed to forced child labor and environmental devastation.

Apple has stated that it actively monitors its supply chain to mitigate risks and improve measures to trace the origin of minerals. The company has also reaffirmed its dedication to preventing the use of conflict minerals in its supply chain.

Authorities in France and Belgium are currently evaluating whether there is sufficient evidence to pursue further legal action. The case highlights the ongoing concerns about the use of conflict minerals in the tech industry and the need for companies to ensure responsible sourcing practices.
