Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 Presidential Candidate, has commented on the recent revamping of the Port Harcourt Refinery.
The refinery resumed operations on Tuesday, November 26, following numerous unfulfilled promises to restore its functionality. In a social media post shared today, Obi extended his congratulations to the NNPC for successfully revamping the refinery. He acknowledged this achievement as a positive development but emphasized the importance of transparency in the corporation’s operations.
Below is his statement:
“I extend my congratulations to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on fulfilling the long-standing promise of revamping the old Port Harcourt Refinery.
This refinery, which comes on stream today, has an installed production capacity of 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day. It is expected to facilitate the daily loading of approximately 200 trucks.
Nigerians now look forward to seeing the corresponding impact and benefits on pump prices and the broader economy.
Similarly, the news of the Kaduna refinery’s revival is encouraging. Its return is anticipated to enhance productivity, ease transportation challenges, and reduce economic pressures nationwide.
While we recognize these milestones as steps in the right direction, it is imperative to stress the need for transparency in the operations of the NNPC.
Nigerians have the right to clarity and accountability in managing the nation’s vital oil resources. This ensures the benefits of increased refining capacity are equitably distributed and that the resulting gains contribute to sustainable national development.
A new Nigeria is POssible.”
