A tragic incident occurred on Thursday, November 7, 2024, in Dangi, Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State, where Faisal Yakubu Hussaini, a young man, was allegedly killed by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) during a raid on a lodge. The operatives reportedly fired gunshots, scaring the youth, and in the process, Yakubu lost his life.
The Kanam Development Association (KADA) has condemned the extrajudicial killing, demanding immediate arrest and prosecution of the officers involved. Secretary ND Shehu Kanam stated, “This heinous act is unacceptable and violates the fundamental human rights of the victim… We urge our youths to remain calm and law-abiding as we pursue legal measures to address this barbaric act.”
The NDLEA has responded, promising to investigate the matter and take appropriate action. Public Relations Officer Abba Muhammad Sani assured that the agency will look into the incident . This incident raises concerns about the use of excessive force by law enforcement agencies and the need for accountability.
The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) was established in 1989 to combat drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria . While the agency plays a crucial role in addressing the country’s drug problems, incidents like this highlight the importance of ensuring that law enforcement actions are carried out within the bounds of the law and respect for human rights.
