In Zamfara State, North-West Nigeria, terrorists dubbed “bandits” now receive ransom through electronic bank transfers.
According to SaharaReporters, it was discovered that on October 3, 2024, N2 million was transferred to a Palmpay virtual bank account (7026353728) owned by Musa Muhammad, believed to be a bandit.
Conflict journalist Bakatsine reported on X: “Bandits in Zamfara State received ransom through bank transfer. After transferring N2 million to their bank account as requested, they later instructed that additional millions be delivered to a specified location…”
The incident occurred in Shinkafi Local Government Area. Bakatsine’s source confirmed the transaction. A money transfer instrument seen by SaharaReporters verified the N2 million payment.
This revelation raises concerns about Nigeria’s financial systems being exploited by terrorists. The use of virtual bank accounts for ransom payments enables anonymity and facilitates illicit activities.
Bakatsine’s report highlights the evolving tactics of Zamfara’s bandits, utilizing banking systems to receive ransom, and underscores the need for enhanced security measures to combat terrorism financing in Nigeria.
