Despite opposition from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Julius Abure secured re-election as the National Chairman of the Labour Party for a second term, with unanimous support from delegates.
The announcement came during the party’s national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, where Mr. Ikechukwu Emetu, the Chairman of the National Convention and Deputy Governor of Abia State, declared him the winner.
However, the convention was marred by controversy as five individuals were arrested amidst the party’s decision to prohibit journalists from covering the event at Grand Seasons Hotel in Nnewi.
Security was heightened due to internal party strife, and attempts by some to distribute inflammatory materials critical of the party’s leadership led to the arrests.
This incident underscores the ongoing crisis within the Labour Party, fueled by disputes over leadership positions, a situation viewed unfavorably by many political observers.
